All Ceramic Restorations are a class of restorations that contain no metals in the form of veneers, crowns, and Inlays and onlays. They are combinations of glass ceramics and crystalline structures. The advantages of all ceramics are characteristics of natural tooth color, strength, conservative preparations, and they are able to be bonded with high strength adhesives. There are a variety of brands and materials for all ceramics so here at Smile Design we are proud to offer high quality products to our patients. Ivoclar emax, Noritake porcelain, and Nobel Procera Zirconia are just a few of the brands we use.
Inlays and Onlays are great alternatives or replacements for silver fillings. These restorations are also another form of all ceramics. They are fabricated (indirectly) by the dental ceramist in the lab so that the fit and finish are of the highest quality. A common and particular use for these restorations are the replacement of very old, large silver fillings. In the past when a large filling that covered most of the chewing surface of the tooth failed the solution was to prepare the tooth for a cap or crown. This procedure requires the dentist to remove a substantial amount of tooth structure. With an onlay the dentist is only required to reduce the minimum amount of tooth structure to replace the filling. Onlays/overlays are also useful for teeth that have been worn down due to teeth grinding.
Dental Implants are a conservative alternative for replacing missing or extracted teeth. The full term for a dental implant is a root form endosseous implant. The implant itself is a small titanium screw that replaces the root form of a natural tooth. The titanium is used to attract and promote attachment in the jaw bone, hence the term endosseous (inside bone) implant. The dental implant is complete when a prosthetic crown, bridge, or denture is attached to it. Together, the implant plus prosthesis will feel and function as natural teeth would.
