Dr Nicolaides qualified in Medicine at the Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany and continued with his training in the United Kingdom, where he practiced Medicine and Cardiology for approximately 15 years. He became a Consultant in Internal Medicine after obtaining his MRCP (UK) and becoming a member of the Royal College of Physicians, London.



After working in Cardiology research for 2 years, he continued with specialty training in Cardiology, becoming a Consultant Cardiologist and then further training in the subspecialties of Electrophysiology (Arrhythmias) and Device implantation and follow-up (pacemakers, defibrillators).

He returned to Cyprus in 2009 and worked as a Consultant Cardiologist at Nicosia General Hospital till December 2016. He was responsible for the Coronary Care Unit (CCU), arrhythmia and pacemaker clinics and implantation of devices and electrophysiological studies and ablation of arrhythmias. He was also active in general Cardiology (Exercise Stress testing, Echocardiography, Holter monitoring) and was also a member of the on-call Cardiology team.


Dr. Eleftherios Nicolaides currently works in the private sector as a Consultant Cardiologist / Electrophysiologist at the Care Medical Institute in Nicosia, where the whole spectrum of non-invasive Cardiology is offered, in addition to device (pacemaker and defibrillator) follow-up and regular arrhythmia and heart failure clinics. He performs invasive procedures at Apollonion Hospital, including implantation of devices and their follow-up.


Dr Nicolaides is also a passionate teacher/academic. He obtained a Master’s degree in Paedagogical Sciences and currently works as a Clinical Associate Professor of Cardiology at the St George’s Medical School, University of Nicosia. In June 2017, he was upgraded and appointed as Associate Director of Postgraduate Clinical Training Program (foundation year) in Cyprus.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Having served as the academic lead of St George’s medical school at Nicosia General Hospital, Dr. Nicolaides is currently continue to function as Honorary Assistant Professor, which involves organisation of the teaching of the medical students and also covering the program as clinical tutor.

Dr. Nicolaides thoroughly enjoy the role of teacher, using his knowledge and skills to develop the education and practice of the multi-disciplinary team, at all levels. This has been initiated by completion of The Teaching Improvement Project, Nottingham University and further enhanced by completion of a Master Degree (Magister Artium) in Pedagogical Sciences at the University of Cyprus with excellence in 2013.

Dr Nicolaides is committed in developing and supporting audit as it is one of the most important tools in implementing clinical governance. His projects include: 
  • Inappropriate thrombolysis in acute MI patients. 
Presented locally and published in the Journal of Clinical Excellence. 
  • Appropriate anti coagulation in Atrial Fibrillation. 
Clinical practice was reviewed and amended as a result. 
  • The consultant’s role in the discharge of medical patients from medical wards. 
  • Appropriate use of Aggrastat in Acute Coronary Syndrome patients.

There is ongoing involvement in audit projects. This is to ensure   improvement of quality and safeguard standards of care, using clinical governance as a guiding framework.
