Vascular Surgery

The specialty of vascular surgery is one of the new specialties. In most of the countries began to be independent specialty the decade of 1990. Vascular Surgery deals with the pathology and treatment of the arteries, veins and lymphatic vessels of the human body except the vessels of the brain and the heart. The development of the specialty was huge the last two decades with the new endovascular procedures and methods to win over the classic cold standards procedures. Thus the new endovascular procedures in most of the cases and with the right indications become the cold standard. Dr Neophytos Zambas has been trained in the new methods like the endovascular repair of abdominal aneurysms, laser ablation of the great saphenous vein and foam sclerotherapy for varicose veins. Peripheral artery balloon angioplasty and stenting for peripheral arterial disease, percutaneous balloon angioplasty and stenting for carotid artery disease and diabetic foot are Dr Zambas special interests. For example symptoms that indicate that you may suffer from peripheral vascular arterial disease is intermittent pain on walking and exercise (intermittent Claudication).Night cramps and, swelling on the legs, are symptoms of varicose veins. Amaurosis fugax, speech problems and numbness of the arm or the leg could be symptoms of a stroke. Redness and pain on your legs could be signs of superficial thrombophlevitis especially if you have varicose veins. Long standing unhealed leg ulcers may be the result of vein incompetence. A sudden pain on the abdomen and the lower back can be the result of an abdominal aneurysm. In these cases you need a proper assessment by a vascular surgeon. High risk patients for vascular disease are diabetics, people who suffered a stroke or have numbness on the hand or on the foot, people with high blood pressure and hypercholesterolemia and heavy smokers.

Vascular Consulation

For diagnostic purposes the following examinations are performed to the doctors medical practice: Doppler of the legs arteries (Ankle Brachial Pressure Index – ABPI) Color Ultrasound Duplex Scan Carotid Arteries Abdominal Aorta and Splachnic Arteries (renal, superior mesenteric) Iliac vessels Arteries and Veins of the lower limbs Arteries and Veins of the Upper Limbs Further examinations would be requested by the doctor when there is indication after the primary consultation. These are the following: Computer Tomography Angiography (CTA) Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA).

Treatment

LASER TREATMENT: Laser treatment has been established as a method of choice for the treatment of varicose veins. Laser offers very good results on the treatment of varicose veins and the benefits compare with the classic saphenectomy with stripping is less pain postoperatively, earlier mobilization, less complications and better aesthetic result as there is no scar on the groin and no stitches. The procedure is offered as a daily procedure and you can go home the same day. The doctor is using the biolitec laser with radial function for better results. Carotid artery stenting: (SEE THE VIDEO IN "VIDEOS" SECTION).
