June 2011 Compliance with best practice of consent for common elective eye procedures (Forward Plan), Scarborough General HospitalWe recognised that the consenting process for laser procedures and cataract operations at our Trust was not as efficient as in other Trusts so we decided to audit it and determine whether we complied with best practice and whether we could identify any ways of improving it. As a result of the audit, we now have pre-printed consent forms for high throughput procedures, such as lasers and cataract surgery, and all patients receive a yellow information leaflet in advance of day of surgery and this is recorded in the consent form.
July 2010 Vertical rectus muscle transposition for chronic sixth nerve paralysis: success and complication rates, St James’s University HospitalThe aim of the audit was to determine whether our surgical outcomes compared favourably to those of recognised published series. There was concern, as we performed this complex procedure infrequently with 5 cases in 7 years; that our results and complication rates would differ to those of specialised centres. Our audit results showed a satisfactory reduction of esotropia comparable with that achieved in other series. Our complication rate was lower than standard and the majority of our patients exhibited increase range of BSV.
